Shaping category templates in Wordpress
You can easily mould your category pages to look different or offer differing functionality in WP.
To shape your category templates all you need to do is ftp in, and duplicate your templates existing category.php – but name it to reflect the category id you are trying to shape. Thus to have a category 5 page look different from the other categories on your site call it category-5.php and alter the php file to suit. There are plugins available too which will pull through and create thumbnails from images in the post – and of course if you wish to show a post excerpt, try the in-dispensable The Excerpt Reloaded plugin, which gives you more control over the content than the WP default. Make sure you use v1.4 of the plugin to get validation fixes.
I spent some time setting up the category pages on An Angel for Satan over the weekend. The aim a filmography page, I think divided up into decades, thus a ’sandwich’ approach with navigation between decades top and bottom, films from that year – with excerpts & thumbs – in the space between.
I’m in a quandary with the years though – if navigation goes 1950s – 1960s – 1970s… 1990s – what should last be? 2000s? Sounds weird.
